Design is a Job. Seriously

Erik Spiekermann wrote the forward to Mike Monteiro’s new book, Design is a Job, which has been fervently flying around the internet with buzz since it was released. It was love at first read when I came across the forward and first sentence. I knew, at this line, that I was in the right place:

He [Monteiro] is a living bullshit detector and will not suffer fools.

The honesty, clarity and critique found in this book are enormously helpful. It makes me want to both yell on the rooftops why being a designer is a freaking awesome job, and simultaneously lower my eyes, admit the mistakes I have made, and take the beating. There are about a thousand quotes I would like to pass on as a take away, aside from this introductory sentence, but you should just read the book. Period.

Important note: Think this doesn’t pertain to you? This book is not just for designers, this is for any and all people who make money by being creative, including: agency principals, studio owners, creative directors, design students, client service professionals, clients, administrative professionals, developers, and anyone pretty much trying to do work they can actually be proud of, and anyone who wants to do good business.
